Nexplanon FAQs

How effective is Nexplanon?

Nexplanon, or the implant birth control, is one of the most effective forms of birth control, with effectiveness of greater than 99 percent. There is little room for human error with this form of birth control. A doctor will inject it into a woman’s upper arm and after approximately five days, the hormones will be fully effective and the woman can forget about it for the next three years until it is time to be replaced. Nexplanon will not protect against any sexually transmitted diseases, so if there are any doubts or lack of knowledge about your partner’s sexual history use a barrier form of birth control like condoms as well.

Will it hurt when it is inserted?

A local anesthetic will be used to numb the insertion area as part of preparation. The area may be a little tender or bruised after the insertion, but the discomfort should ease fairly quickly.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effect of Nexplanon is irregular bleeding, especially during the first six to 12 months after insertion while the body adjusts to the hormones. This could be spotting between periods or longer heavier periods. Less common side effects can include, acne, changes in appetite or sex drive, headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Anyone considering Nexplanon or any kind of birth control should discuss their lifestyle, health history, and concerns with their doctor to collect all of the information to make an informed decision.
